Detroit Tigers center fielder Parker Meadows was hospitalized for overnight observation after a frightening outfield collision with teammate Riley Greene during Thursday’s game against the Minnesota Twins at Target Field.
The incident occurred when Meadows and Greene converged on a fly ball in left-center field. Greene successfully made the catch, but Meadows collided head-to-head with him and fell onto his back, appearing dazed and barely moving as medical staff rushed onto the field. Blood was visible on Meadows’ face, and after several tense moments, he was able to sit up before being carefully assisted to a medical cart and taken for further evaluation.
Greene expressed concern for his teammate following the game, saying the collision left him shaken and hoping Meadows would recover quickly. He explained that he was unsure exactly how the contact happened but confirmed that the two players made significant head contact during the play.
After the Tigers’ 3-1 loss to Minnesota, manager A.J. Hinch confirmed that Meadows suffered a concussion as a result of the collision. The impact also caused Meadows to bite the inside of his mouth, leading to visible bleeding on the field. Hinch stated that medical personnel would conduct thorough evaluations, noting that the situation was concerning due to the severity of the impact.
The play occurred in the eighth inning when Josh Bell hit a shallow fly ball that dropped into the gap between left and center field. Greene appeared to call for the ball while both players sprinted toward it, and Meadows attempted to slow down at the last moment. However, his face struck Greene’s head, sending both players tumbling to the grass in a dangerous collision.
Tigers catcher Jake Rogers described the play as a difficult “tweener” ball, noting that both outfielders aggressively pursued it, which contributed to the frightening incident. The Tigers were ultimately swept in the four-game series by the Twins following Thursday’s defeat.
Meadows has been a regular presence in center field for Detroit this season, starting 11 of the team’s first 13 games at the position, while Matt Vierling handled the remaining starts. Before the collision, Meadows went 0-for-3 in Thursday’s game and entered the matchup batting .250 with two extra-base hits.
The 26-year-old outfielder was originally selected by Detroit in the second round of the MLB Draft in 2018 and made his Major League Baseball debut in 2023. His career has included several injury setbacks, including a nerve issue in his upper right arm that sidelined him for the first two months of last season, followed by a shoulder injury that kept him out for more than a month. He finished that campaign with a .215 batting average and a .621 OPS.
Meadows’ health status will continue to be closely monitored as the Tigers await further medical updates following the collision, with the team prioritizing his recovery after the alarming on-field incident.
