Spurs, De’Aaron Fox reach 4-year, $229M max extension, agent says

San Antonio Spurs star De’Aaron Fox has officially signed a four-year, $229 million maximum contract extension with the team, as announced by Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul to ESPN on Monday.

The deal, which does not include a player option for the final year, ensures Fox remains with the Spurs until the end of the 2029-30 season. This contract follows a trade deadline move that brought the former All-Star and All-NBA guard from the Sacramento Kings to San Antonio.

Fox and Paul successfully orchestrated a trade to Fox’s desired team in February and later secured this long-term deal, benefiting from Texas’s lack of an income tax in contrast to California. In statements released by the team, Fox expressed his determination to contribute to the Spurs’ championship legacy.

“Being part of an organization like this is something special…you can really sense it in the atmosphere and among the fans,” Fox remarked. “When you step into the practice facility or arena and see those championship banners, it motivates you to strive for greater achievements.”

In June’s NBA draft, the Spurs selected guard Dylan Harper with the second overall pick, bolstering their promising backcourt alongside Fox and Stephon Castle.

Fox, along with Victor Wembanyama—who played only five games together last season—has built a strong bond and is expected to anchor the Spurs’ lineup for the foreseeable future, complemented by back-to-back Rookie of the Year winners Wembanyama and Castle, as well as Harper’s addition.

Fox averaged 19.7 points and 6.8 assists in 17 games with the Spurs last season and underwent season-ending surgery on March 18 to fix tendon damage in his left pinky. He had been coping with the injury since suffering it during training camp in October.

“Going forward, fans will see me playing with both hands fully functional,” Fox stated.

Over his tenure with the Spurs and Kings, Fox has averaged 23.5 points, 6.3 assists, and 4.8 rebounds in 62 games. He set a franchise record for the Kings with a 60-point performance against the Minnesota Timberwolves on November 15, a feat matched by only Nikola Jokic among NBA players last season.

Fox is one of just two players, alongside Luka Doncic, to maintain averages of at least 20 points, 5 assists, and 1 steal over the past six seasons. He is also among four players, including James Harden, Russell Westbrook, and Jokic, to have achieved 10,000 points, 3,000 assists, and 700 steals since he entered the league in 2017-18.
