The Cleveland Browns are likely to have rookie Shedeur Sanders take the helm as quarterback for the preseason kickoff against the Carolina Panthers this Friday, according to sources that informed ESPN.
Sanders was chosen in the fifth round of the current draft and stands as the second quarterback selected by the Browns, following Dillon Gabriel, who was picked in round three.
Both newcomers are vying for the starting quarterback position in Cleveland, competing against seasoned players Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett. This week, the team also added former Pro Bowler Tyler Huntley.
Despite having received the least practice time with the starters during training camp, injuries to Pickett and Gabriel, along with Flacco’s age and experience at 40 years old, could create an opportunity for Sanders to make his NFL debut. Flacco has had the most time with the starters in practice.
The Browns are set to commence joint training sessions with the Panthers in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Wednesday, leading up to their matchup on Friday.
