Sources: 49ers Have No Plans to Trade Mac Jones, Expect Him Back as Brock Purdy’s Backup

The San Francisco 49ers are not planning to trade quarterback Mac Jones this offseason and intend to keep him as Brock Purdy’s backup, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Sunday.

Jones remains under contract through the 2026 season after signing a two-year deal with San Francisco in free agency last year.

The former first-round pick stepped in for Purdy in eight games this season and helped keep the 49ers in playoff contention, compiling a 5–3 record as a starter. Jones recorded a 62.9 QBR — ninth-best in the NFL — while throwing for 13 touchdowns and six interceptions and averaging 268.9 passing yards per game.

The strong performance marked a turnaround for Jones, who posted QBR ratings of 38.4, 37.5, and 36.6 across his previous three seasons with the New England Patriots and Jacksonville Jaguars.

Drafted by the Patriots in the first round in 2021, Jones has totaled 12,741 passing yards, 67 touchdowns, and 50 interceptions over five NFL seasons.
