Ravens Without Lamar Jackson and Three More Pro Bowlers for Sunday’s Game Against Texans

The Baltimore Ravens will be without quarterback Lamar Jackson for Sunday’s matchup against the Houston Texans due to a hamstring injury. This marks the first time Jackson, a two-time NFL MVP, will miss a game because of injury since January 2023’s wild-card playoff loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.

Since 2018, the Ravens have struggled without Jackson, holding a 4-10 record and averaging just 16.6 points per game in his absence. The Ravens, currently 1-3, are also battling a slew of injuries with nine players on the injury list, including four Pro Bowlers from last season: Jackson, middle linebacker Roquan Smith (hamstring), cornerback Marlon Humphrey (calf), and fullback Patrick Ricard (calf).

Stepping in as quarterback will be Cooper Rush, making his first start for Baltimore. Rush, who joined the team this offseason on a two-year, $6.2 million deal, brings starting experience from his time with the Dallas Cowboys, holding a 9-5 record as a starter with 20 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. “Whenever a franchise QB goes down, it feels like the sky is falling,” Rush said. “But it’s good to have a full week to prepare and know what you need to do.”

Jackson suffered the injury during last Sunday’s 37-20 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs and has since missed all team practices. The Ravens are eager to avoid a rare 1-4 start to their season. Their last victory without Jackson came in December 2022, and they have lost their last four games without him on the field.

Despite the team’s struggles, Jackson has delivered a solid performance this season, ranking fifth in the NFL in Total QBR (72.8) with 10 touchdowns and just one interception. With him playing, the Ravens are scoring an impressive 32.8 points per game, third-best in the league. However, Jackson has endured heavy pressure, being sacked 15 times, the second most in the NFL.

Rush has been leaning on Jackson for advice and insight, especially on plays involving key receivers like Zay Flowers. Head coach John Harbaugh emphasized the importance of Rush playing his own style within the Ravens’ offense. “He knows the offense, and we’re ready to go,” Harbaugh said.

In addition to the six confirmed injuries, four other players are listed as questionable: safety Kyle Hamilton (groin), outside linebacker Odafe Oweh (eye), offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley (ankle), and wide receiver Devontez Walker (oblique). Hamilton, a two-time Pro Bowler, has missed the past two practices.

Despite the mounting setbacks and tough start, Harbaugh remains optimistic about the team’s spirit. “The vibe around the team has been really positive and really determined,” he said.
