Packers RB MarShawn Lloyd’s Injury Woes Continue, May Miss Season Opener

The injury struggles have persisted for Green Bay Packers running back MarShawn Lloyd, as his latest hamstring problem may prevent him from participating in the opening game of the regular season and possibly longer.

Lloyd, anticipated to serve as a backup to running back Josh Jacobs, exited Saturday’s preseason matchup against the Indianapolis Colts following a 33-yard reception in the second quarter.

“He’ll be out for a while,” said Packers head coach Matt LaFleur on Sunday.

Last season, Lloyd was sidelined for all but one game during his rookie year due to various injuries and an illness. The second-round selection for 2024 was unable to start his initial training camp due to a hip injury and then suffered a hamstring injury during his first appearance in the preseason. He returned for the second week of the regular season but incurred an ankle injury that led to his placement on injured reserve.

Just when he was gearing up for his return, he had to have an emergency appendectomy in November. After he healed from the appendectomy, he then suffered another hamstring injury.

On Saturday, he was set to make his debut for 2025, having missed the initial preseason match due to a groin issue, prompting several individuals in the Packers organization to comment that they haven’t witnessed such prolonged injury woes in a long time.

“Honestly, I haven’t seen it, and I doubt anyone else here has either, or very few have,” remarked Ben Sirmans, the running backs coach for the Packers. “It’s just one of those unfortunate situations, but given how dedicated he is, you can only hope that eventually he will overcome all of this and be alright.”

The Packers may also be without rookie defensive lineman Barryn Sorrell, who injured his knee during the game against the Colts. LaFleur mentioned that he is likely to be sidelined for several weeks.

Meanwhile, safety Omar Brown has to stay another night at an Indianapolis hospital after exiting Saturday’s game due to what LaFleur described as a lung injury.

“Hopefully, he will be discharged tomorrow,” LaFleur stated on Sunday.

Quarterback Jordan Love, who had surgery on his left thumb last Tuesday, might be able to return to practice as early as Monday, LaFleur said. Love did not participate in the game against the Colts but threw during pregame warmups, being cautious not to place his non-throwing hand on the ball.
