LOS ANGELES — The Miami Marlins have acquired outfielder Esteury Ruiz from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for minor league right-hander Adriano Marrero.
Ruiz, 26, led the American League with 67 stolen bases for the Oakland Athletics in 2023. Over four MLB seasons with four different teams, he has a .241 career batting average but is highly regarded for his speed on the bases and defensive skills.
The Dodgers had picked up Ruiz from Oakland last April, and he saw limited action with Los Angeles, hitting .190 in 19 games while mainly serving as a defensive replacement or pinch runner for the back-to-back World Series champions.
To make room for Ruiz on their 40-man roster, the Marlins designated infielder Eric Wagaman for assignment. The trade also freed up a spot on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster.
Ruiz is expected to serve as a versatile backup outfielder for Miami, potentially filling the role left by Dane Myers, who was traded to Cincinnati last weekend.
