Lewis Hamilton Expresses Doubts Over ‘Itchy’ Cooling Vest Ahead of Singapore GP

Seven-time F1 champion Lewis Hamilton has expressed skepticism about the cooling vest that drivers are encouraged to wear at this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix, citing discomfort due to the vest’s itchy feel.

The FIA has designated the Singapore race as a heat hazard, introducing a new rule requiring cars to carry an additional 5kg to accommodate the cooling system. Drivers can choose to wear the optional cooling vest; if they opt out, ballast is added to their car instead.

“I’ve never used it, but I’ll give it a try,” Hamilton said on Thursday. “It’s quite uncomfortable and it itches a lot, so I’m not sure I want to race with an itchy vest on.”

Most drivers are expected to test the vest during Friday’s practice sessions before deciding whether to wear it for the rest of the weekend.

This regulation was introduced following the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix, where extreme humidity caused difficulties for many drivers. Williams’ Logan Sargeant retired early due to feeling unwell, and Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll collapsed next to his car after the race.

Some drivers had already used the vests at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix earlier this season. Seeing the positive impact there has motivated more drivers to consider using it in Singapore.

Sauber’s Nico Hülkenberg revealed how seeing teammate Alex Albon’s condition after that race influenced his decision. “After Jeddah, I was completely drained,” Hülkenberg said. “It was extremely hot. Alex wore the vest and looked fresh as a spring chicken. That convinced me to try it next time.”
