Cowboys’ Trevon Diggs sidelined vs. Commanders after home accident

Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs will miss Sunday’s game against the Washington Commanders after sustaining a concussion in an accident at his home on Thursday. He was evaluated by team doctors on Friday and placed in the NFL’s concussion protocol.

Head coach Brian Schottenheimer said he didn’t have full details about the incident but emphasized concern for Diggs’ well-being. “This is the NFL — if you’re unsure what’s coming, just wait, because something always happens,” Schottenheimer said. “You deal with it and don’t lose sleep over it. The most important thing is making sure Trevon is OK, and he seems to be.”

Diggs, who started every game this season after beginning training camp on the physically unable to perform list due to left knee surgery in January, has also been managing a right knee issue. So far, he’s recorded 20 tackles, one tackle for loss, and two pass breakups.

In his absence, the Cowboys plan to start Kaiir Elam opposite DaRon Bland and are expected to activate Caelen Carson (knee) from injured reserve for his season debut.

Losing Diggs is a blow to a defense that already ranks last in total yards allowed and 31st in points per game. The Cowboys have discussed adjustments this week, including incorporating more man-to-man coverage — one of Diggs’ strengths.

“It doesn’t change our approach,” Schottenheimer added. “We always make adjustments on game day, but the plan is solid. Now it’s about executing and playing well against a strong Commanders offense.”
