Blues’ Philip Broberg signs extension, exits early with injury

LAS VEGAS — The St. Louis Blues locked up defenseman Philip Broberg with a six-year, $48 million contract extension on Saturday, but the celebration was short-lived as he suffered an upper-body injury just 1:35 into a 4-2 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights.

Broberg was injured after a hit along the boards from Golden Knights captain Mark Stone, losing his balance and crashing to the ice. He did not return to the game, and Blues coach Jim Montgomery said Broberg is considered day to day. Montgomery noted the disappointment surrounding the injury, especially after the excitement of announcing the extension, which forced the Blues to play with five defensemen during a stretch of three games in four nights.

Moments after the incident, Blues captain Brayden Schenn fought Stone, with both players receiving major penalties after exchanging punches and tearing Stone’s jersey. At the time of Broberg’s injury, St. Louis led 1-0, with Broberg recording the primary assist on Robert Thomas’ goal less than a minute into the game.

Broberg, recently named to Sweden’s roster for the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics, is in his second season with the Blues after signing as a restricted free agent in August 2024. The 24-year-old has posted two goals and 12 assists in 45 games this season, following an eight-goal, 21-assist campaign in 68 games last year.

General manager Doug Armstrong praised the deal, calling Broberg a key piece of the team’s future during his prime years. Broberg has appeared in 194 regular-season games, recording 56 points, and has played in 27 postseason games, including a run to the Stanley Cup Final with the Edmonton Oilers in 2023-24.
