Auston Matthews Injury Update: Maple Leafs Captain Undergoes MCL Surgery, Faces 12-Week Recovery

The Toronto Maple Leafs have confirmed that captain Auston Matthews successfully underwent MCL surgery in New York on Thursday, officially ruling him out for the remainder of the season.

According to the team, Matthews is expected to face a 12-week recovery timeline, with optimism that he will be fully fit in time for training camp ahead of the next NHL season.

The injury stemmed from a knee-on-knee collision with Radko Gudas of the Anaheim Ducks. The incident led to a five-game suspension for Gudas, though Toronto expressed dissatisfaction, believing the punishment did not match the severity of the play.

Head coach Craig Berube voiced frustration over losing his captain for the season, while Matthews’ agent, Judd Moldaver, strongly criticized the NHL’s disciplinary process.

The situation has reignited debate around player safety, with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman defending the league’s system, alongside player safety head George Parros.

Matthews’ absence adds to a difficult season for the Maple Leafs, who are on track to miss the playoffs for the first time since his debut in 2016-17. The team has already made roster changes as part of a broader reset.

Before the injury, Matthews—who recently captained Team USA to Olympic gold—recorded 27 goals and 53 points in 60 games, averaging over 20 minutes of ice time per night.

He is also expected to miss the upcoming international tournaments, including potential participation with Team USA, as he focuses on recovery and a full return to action.
