Atlético Madrid forward Julián Álvarez has revealed that Lionel Messi inspired his spectacular free kick during his side’s 2-0 victory over FC Barcelona at Camp Nou in their UEFA Champions League quarterfinal clash.
The Argentina international produced a moment of brilliance on the stroke of half-time, curling a powerful free kick into the top corner to give Atlético Madrid the lead. The goal stunned the home crowd and shifted momentum in favour of Diego Simeone’s side. Atlético secured a strong 2-0 first-leg advantage, with Alexander Sørloth adding the second goal later in the match.

Julián Álvarez scored a sensational free kick against Barcelona.
Speaking after the match, Álvarez admitted that he drew inspiration from a famous free kick scored by Messi against Liverpool FC at Camp Nou in May 2019. He explained that he had watched the goal several times and tried to replicate the technique, even though he was not completely certain the ball would reach the exact corner. He added that after striking the ball, he immediately sensed it was heading perfectly into the net, despite struggling to score during training sessions the previous day.
The stunning free kick increased Álvarez’s goal tally to 18 for the season, further boosting his reputation as one of Europe’s most in-demand forwards. The Argentine striker remains under contract with Atlético Madrid until June 2030, but growing interest from top clubs has intensified speculation about his future. Reports suggest that Barcelona have identified Álvarez as a major transfer target, while Arsenal FC are also reportedly considering a move for the forward.
Atlético Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has responded firmly to the increasing transfer rumours, making it clear that the club will control any decision regarding Álvarez’s future. He stated that as long as the player remains under contract for several more years, no move will happen unless the club decides otherwise, emphasizing that Atlético remain in full control of the situation.
Barcelona are actively searching for attacking reinforcements ahead of the summer transfer window, especially with veteran striker Robert Lewandowski approaching the end of his current contract. Reports indicate that Barcelona president Joan Laporta views Álvarez as an ideal long-term replacement in the forward line.
Álvarez joined Atlético Madrid in a €75 million transfer from Manchester City FC in 2024, and he has quickly established himself as a key figure in Diego Simeone’s squad. Despite ongoing speculation about his future, the forward insists that he remains focused on his performances and helping his team succeed during the crucial stage of the season.
After earning the Player of the Match award in the 2-0 victory at Camp Nou, Álvarez said he feels confident and in excellent form, highlighting that the most important matches of the season are still ahead. However, he also warned that the tie is far from over, acknowledging the strength and experience of Barcelona.
With Atlético Madrid now holding a two-goal advantage, Álvarez stressed the importance of staying focused for the return leg at the Metropolitano Stadium, where Atlético will look to use their home crowd support to secure qualification for the Champions League semifinals.
