Alex Ovechkin partners with technology company on movie rights

Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin has teamed up with a tech firm from Russia to create a film, series, or documentary focused on his journey in the NHL.

Yandex, along with its streaming service Kinopoisk, made the announcement on Tuesday.

This past spring, Ovechkin surpassed Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals record, entering the final year of his contract with the Capitals having netted 897 goals. The 40-year-old, who celebrates his birthday next month, along with his agents, has granted the rights to transform his career story into a project under Yandex’s production division, Plus Studio.

The Moscow-born athlete initiated his professional journey in the Russian league, now recognized as the KHL. As part of this arrangement, he is anticipated to participate in advertising campaigns and act as a representative for Yandex.

Ovechkin has spent his entire NHL tenure with Washington after being selected first overall by the Capitals in 2004, making his on-ice debut in 2005. He has been the franchise’s leading figure ever since and has held the captaincy since January 2010. In 2018, he was named MVP of the playoffs while guiding the Capitals to their inaugural Stanley Cup title.
