Liverpool has reached an agreement to sign German attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for £116 million. This total includes a guaranteed £100 million and an additional £16 million in potential bonuses.

These extra payments will be triggered if Liverpool maintains a high level of success, which would then make this transfer the most expensive in British football history.
Currently, the record for an initial transfer fee is held by Chelsea, who signed Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez from Benfica for £107 million in 2023.
Chelsea also acquired Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo for an initial fee of £100 million that could increase to £115 million.
Manchester City had shown interest in Wirtz but decided to back off due to the high costs involved. Bayern Munich was also mentioned as a possible suitor for him.
Wirtz debuted for Leverkusen at just 17 years old and scored 57 goals in 197 matches for the club. He played a key role in helping them win their first Bundesliga title in 2024 and has netted seven goals in 31 games for Germany since his national team debut in 2021.
The player’s ability to play in different positions will be very useful for Liverpool. He can attack from the left side or play more in the center. Wirtz has a great talent for breaking through defenses and making key passes.
He is excellent at finding open spaces and will bring more goals to the team. His effort when he doesn’t have the ball is impressive, but we wonder if he will adjust quickly to the faster and more physical style of the Premier League. With his strong work ethic, Liverpool will surely gain a hardworking and talented player for their team.
