Denny Hamlin to miss Mexico City race after birth of son

Denny Hamlin will not participate in NASCAR’s first international race of the modern era as he stays in North Carolina after welcoming his new child. Ryan Truex will step in for him on Sunday in Mexico City.

“See you guys in Pocono,” Hamlin shared on social media. “We are excited to announce the arrival of our son. Everyone is doing great. My top priority is to stay home with Jordan and our family over the next few days as she recovers and we adjust to being a family of five.”

Hamlin and his fiancée, Jordan Fish, now have three kids: two daughters and a son who was born Wednesday. He had been waiting for the baby to arrive for the last 12 days since Fish was nearly two weeks past her due date.

Hamlin had planned to leave the car during last Sunday’s race at Michigan if she went into labor early, but when the first stage ended without any news, he went on to win his third race of the season. This victory marked the 57th of his career, making him the all-time winningest driver at Joe Gibbs Racing.

After 15 races this season, Hamlin sits third in the overall Cup Series standings. Truex, who is Martin Truex Jr.’s younger brother and serves as Gibbs’ reserve driver, last raced in the Cup Series back in 2014 and has made 26 starts at NASCAR’s highest level.

To compete in the playoffs for the Cup Series championship, Hamlin will need NASCAR to give him a waiver. Although NASCAR tightened its waiver rules during the offseason, they have stated that they will allow a driver to miss an event for a child’s birth.

Hamlin, who is 44 years old, will end his run of 406 straight starts. The last time he missed a race was in 2014 at California Speedway due to an eye issue.
