Unlikely Chiefs wide receiver shines as an early ‘star’ at OTAs: ‘He was all over the field.’

The Kansas City Chiefs conducted their first media-friendly session of Organized Team Activities (OTAs) on May 29, and a surprising wide receiver drew the attention of several reporters present.

“Tyquan Thornton impressed me with his athleticism and the way he worked with the quarterbacks during team drills and 7-on-7s,” shared KSHB 41 beat member Nick Jacobs on X.

Later, Arrowhead Pride writer Pete Sweeney concurred, mentioning in a thread: “During the 7-on-7 period, WR Tyquan Thornton caught two quick passes. As a former second-round pick, he stood out offensively on Thursday. He seemed to be everywhere.”

Thornton joined the Chiefs last year as a low-profile midseason addition. Like many Kansas City receivers who miss OTAs and training camp, he spent his initial months with the team learning the playbook and offensive system while on the practice squad.

In 2025, this former second-round talent from the New England Patriots has a genuine chance to secure a spot on the Chiefs’ 53-man roster, but he must compete against a strong group of pass-catchers.

Despite welcoming star wideout Rashee Rice back this season, general manager Brett Veach continued to strengthen the position by re-signing Hollywood Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster, along with drafting Jalen Royals in round four.

For practical purposes, midseason additions like Thornton and Jason Brownlee should also be viewed as part of the 2025 roster since they already have a foundational understanding of head coach Andy Reid’s offense.
