Sources: New York Knicks Trade for Pelicans Guard Jose Alvarado

The New York Knicks are set to acquire point guard Jose Alvarado from the New Orleans Pelicans in a trade that sends Dalen Terry, two second-round draft picks, and cash considerations to New Orleans, sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania.

The move comes after Knicks guard Miles McBride underwent core muscle surgery, according to sources who spoke with ESPN’s Vince Goodwill. McBride, a key rotation player for New York this season, is expected to miss an extended period, and his availability for the playoffs remains uncertain.

Alvarado, a Brooklyn native, is expected to step into the role left vacant by McBride. Undrafted in 2021, Alvarado has built a reputation as a relentless defender and high-energy contributor. Known by the nickname “Grand Theft Alvarado,” he is particularly recognized for his knack for stealing inbounds passes at unexpected moments.

Alvarado began his NBA career on a two-way contract with the Pelicans before earning a standard deal through strong performances. He signed a contract extension last season and holds a $4.5 million player option for next year.

Dalen Terry, 23, who the Knicks previously acquired from the Chicago Bulls in a deal involving Guerschon Yabusele, is now headed to New Orleans as part of this trade. Terry is on an expiring contract and is scheduled to become a free agent this summer.

The Athletic was the first to report news of McBride’s surgery.
