Liverpool Target Sunderland Loanee Lutsharel Geertruida in Defensive Reinforcement Push

LIVERPOOL — Liverpool are exploring a potential move for Netherlands international Lutsharel Geertruida, who is currently on loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig, sources have told ESPN.

Discussions are underway regarding the possibility of ending Geertruida’s season-long loan at the Premier League club, which would open the door for a transfer to Anfield before the January transfer window closes on Monday.

Sources indicate that the 25-year-old defender is among several options being considered as Liverpool look to strengthen their back line amid an ongoing injury crisis. The Reds have been hit hard defensively this season, with Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni ruled out for the remainder of the campaign, while Joe Gomez and Jeremie Frimpong are also currently unavailable.

Although primarily deployed as a right-back, Geertruida is capable of operating at centre-back or in midfield, making him an attractive and flexible option for Liverpool as they push for a top-four Premier League finish.

Geertruida is already familiar with Liverpool head coach Arne Slot, having played under him for three seasons at Feyenoord, where he also served as club captain. The Dutch defender completed a move to RB Leipzig in 2024, before being loaned out this season.
