The Dallas Mavericks announced on Friday that Anthony Davis has ligament damage in his left hand, an injury that could require surgery and potentially sideline him for several months, sources told ESPN. The injury occurred late in Thursday’s road loss to the Utah Jazz while Davis was defending Lauri Markkanen on a drive to the basket. Davis is expected to seek second opinions before deciding whether surgery is necessary.
If a nonsurgical approach is chosen, sources say Davis would miss at least six weeks. The Mavericks have been actively exploring trade options for the 32-year-old, but his history of injuries and desire for a lucrative contract extension complicate the market. Davis is due $58.5 million next season and holds a player option for $62.8 million in 2027-28.
Since joining Dallas in February 2025 as part of the controversial Luka Doncic trade, Davis has been limited to 29 games plus a few play-in appearances due to multiple injuries. He strained an adductor in his debut, missed six weeks, then sat out 14 games in November with a left calf strain. He also missed two more games after a minor adductor strain on Christmas Day.
This season, Davis has averaged 20.4 points, 11.1 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks over 20 games.
