Giants agree to one-year contract with Tyler Mahle, source says

The San Francisco Giants have reached an agreement with right-handed pitcher Tyler Mahle on a one-year contract, a source told ESPN on Wednesday.

Mahle, 31, emerged as one of the Texas Rangers’ top starters in 2025, recording a career-low 2.18 ERA. However, a shoulder issue kept him sidelined for roughly three months, limiting him to 16 starts. He ended the season with a 6–4 record, striking out 66 batters while issuing 29 walks over 86⅔ innings.

Mahle joins a Giants rotation led by All-Stars Logan Webb and Robbie Ray. San Francisco has also added right-hander Adrian Houser on a two-year, $22 million deal this month as part of efforts to strengthen a pitching staff that ranked 17th in MLB with a 4.10 ERA last season and saw Justin Verlander depart via free agency. Additional internal starting options include Landen Roupp, Carson Whisenhunt, JT Brubaker, Hayden Birdsong, and Blade Tidwell.

The Giants have also signed relievers Sam Hentges and Jason Foley to major-league contracts to add bullpen depth, though the offseason has otherwise been relatively quiet following an 81–81 finish and third-place showing in the NL West.

Mahle is set to enter his 10th MLB season and will be pitching for his fourth organization. He spent more than five seasons with the Cincinnati Reds before stints with the Rangers and Minnesota Twins. Across his career, he owns a 39–46 record in 144 appearances (141 starts), along with a 4.07 ERA and 753 strikeouts.

Durability has been a concern in recent years, as Mahle has made just 24 starts and logged 125 innings over the past three seasons. He missed the first four months of the 2024 campaign while recovering from elbow surgery and later dealt with shoulder tightness.

The agreement was first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.
