Sources: Marlins, Pete Fairbanks reach agreement on 1-year, $13 million contract

Relief pitcher Pete Fairbanks has agreed to a one-year, $13 million deal with the Miami Marlins, sources said;

The 32-year-old Fairbanks had an $11 million option declined by the Tampa Bay Rays before entering free agency, ultimately securing $2 million more than that figure.

As Tampa Bay’s primary closer over the past four seasons, Fairbanks recorded 83 saves, a 2.83 ERA, 332 strikeouts, and 103 walks across 265⅓ innings. Known for a 97 mph fastball, a strong slider, and an elite cutter added midseason in 2025, he was one of the top high-leverage relievers on the market.

Fairbanks’ standout season came in 2023, striking out 13.5 batters per nine innings and posting an 11-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Despite earlier durability concerns, he pitched a career-high 60⅓ innings in 2025 and tallied a personal-best 27 saves.

The deal was first reported by The Athletic.
