Ruben Amorim: Kobbie Mainoo is central to Manchester United’s long-term plans

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has reaffirmed his belief that Kobbie Mainoo is a key part of the club’s future, even if the young midfielder has to be patient for his opportunity.

The 20-year-old has struggled for regular minutes at Old Trafford this season, making just one start in the Carabao Cup and appearing 12 times in total across all competitions. Amorim recently challenged Mainoo to “fight for his job,” but the midfielder’s progress has been disrupted by a calf injury picked up in training ahead of Sunday’s loss to Aston Villa. His absence comes at a difficult time for United, who are already without seven other players.

Despite Mainoo’s limited game time, Amorim stressed that he is thinking long term when it comes to the England international. The United boss explained that Mainoo’s versatility works in his favor, noting that he can operate in defensive midfield, fit into a system with three at the back, or play a more advanced role similar to Mason Mount’s position in the most recent match, where the number 10 drops into midfield.

Amorim made it clear that Mainoo’s chance will come, underlining his confidence in the youngster’s ability to contribute across multiple roles when called upon.

Kobbie Mainoo has found first-team opportunities few and far between this season.

Amorim reiterated his belief that Mainoo is destined to play a major role at Manchester United, stressing that the young midfielder simply needs patience. He explained that football can change very quickly and that an opportunity could arise within days.

While the United head coach played down the likelihood of Mainoo leaving on loan in January — a move made even less likely by his recent injury — he also made it clear that any departure would depend on bringing in a suitable replacement. Amorim admitted that without new arrivals, it would be difficult to allow players to leave, adding that even with a full squad, United are already stretched and vulnerable to further setbacks.

Strengthening the midfield remains a priority, but with the January transfer window approaching and players such as Casemiro and centre-back Harry Maguire nearing the end of their contracts in the summer — though Casemiro has a 12-month extension option — Amorim acknowledged there are several factors to consider. He confirmed that no decisions have yet been made regarding their futures.

Amorim emphasized that the club has significant planning to do, particularly with uncertainty over European football next season. For now, he said, contract discussions are not a focus, adding that while he is pleased with both players, he cannot predict what will happen.

The United boss also insisted he would not be frustrated if no new signings arrive in January. Speaking ahead of the clash with Newcastle, Amorim said the club is sticking to a clear long-term plan. He explained that United would only move for a player if they believe he can be part of the club’s future.

If not, Amorim pointed to the existing options and returning players, including Jack Fletcher and Shea Lacey, as well as the upcoming returns of Amad Diallo, Noussair Mazraoui, Bryan Mbeumo, Bruno Fernandes, and Kobbie Mainoo, suggesting the squad will soon be strengthened from within.
