The Edmonton Oilers’ hopes of strengthening their goaltending took a sudden setback as the team placed Tristan Jarry on injured reserve with a lower-body injury, just days after acquiring him.
The Oilers announced the IR designation Friday, following Thursday’s matchup against the Boston Bruins in which Jarry appeared to tweak something while sliding across the crease midway through the second period. After struggling to get up, he was replaced by Calvin Pickard.
Pickard is now expected to take over starting duties for Edmonton, with Connor Ingram — recalled from the AHL on Friday — serving as the backup.
Head coach Kris Knoblauch did not provide an update on Jarry’s status after the Oilers’ 3-1 win over Boston.
Jarry’s injury comes early in his tenure with Edmonton, having made only three starts since being traded from the Pittsburgh Penguins on Dec. 12. The Oilers also received forward Sam Poulin in that deal, while Pittsburgh acquired goalie Stuart Skinner, defenseman Brett Kulak, and a 2029 second-round draft pick.
Before the injury, Jarry held a 12-3-1 record with a .906 save percentage and 2.73 goals-against average this season. Pickard has posted an .858 SV% and 3.91 GAA in limited action, while Ingram — acquired from Utah in October — has struggled in the AHL with a 4-5-2 record, an .856 SV%, and a 4.04 GAA.
