The Dallas Mavericks have signed head coach Jason Kidd to a multiyear contract extension, the team revealed on Tuesday. While the specific terms of the deal remain undisclosed, the extension solidifies Kidd’s role with the organization.
Patrick Dumont, the team’s governor, praised Kidd’s leadership, stating, “Our entire organization deeply values Coach Kidd’s leadership, focus, and positive energy. He embodies the qualities we seek in a leader, and I’m thrilled he’ll remain with us for years to come. We’re confident he will continue to guide our team with thoughtfulness and integrity as we strive to bring championships to Dallas.”
The extension follows significant interest in Kidd from the New York Knicks, who sought to interview him for their coaching vacancy before ultimately hiring Mike Brown. The Mavericks, however, declined to grant the Knicks permission to speak with Kidd, who has compiled an impressive 179-149 record over his four seasons with Dallas. Under his leadership, the Mavs reached the 2022 Western Conference Finals and the 2024 NBA Finals.
Kidd expressed his gratitude, saying, “I’m thankful for the belief that Patrick and [general manager] Nico [Harrison] have in me and for the trust we’ve built while creating a team Dallas can be proud of. We have a talented, coachable group of players who love basketball. It’s especially meaningful to continue coaching the team that drafted me and where I won a championship as a player. I’m excited for what lies ahead and committed to bringing another title to Dallas.”
This isn’t the first time Kidd has drawn attention from other teams. During Dallas’ 2024 playoff run, the Los Angeles Lakers also expressed interest in interviewing him, which led to his previous contract extension.
