NFL Shock: Titans Dismiss Brian Callahan After Disastrous 1–5 Start to 2025 Season

The Brian Callahan era in Nashville has officially come to an end. The Tennessee Titans announced Monday that they have fired head coach Brian Callahan following a disappointing 1–5 start to the 2025 NFL season. The decision came a day after Tennessee’s 20–10 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, extending their early-season struggles.

“These decisions are never easy, and they become more difficult when they involve people of great character,” said Chad Brinker, Titans President of Football Operations. “We are grateful for Brian’s investment in the Titans and the Tennessee community during his tenure. Our players, fans, and city deserve a team that meets a higher standard, and we’re committed to making the tough choices needed to reach that goal.”

Callahan was hired in January 2024 after spending five years as the offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals. Tasked with replacing Mike Vrabel and developing young quarterback Will Levis, Callahan’s stint never found traction. The Titans went 4–19 under his leadership, including a 3–14 finish in 2024 that landed them the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Despite offseason optimism with new quarterback Cameron Ward, Tennessee’s offense has continued to sputter. Through six weeks, the Titans rank last in total yards per game (232.3) and second-worst in points per game (13.8).

Tennessee’s early-season woes included blown leads against the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Rams, followed by a lopsided loss to the Indianapolis Colts. After that defeat, Callahan handed play-calling duties to quarterbacks coach Bo Hardegree, but the change failed to produce results. The Titans were shut out by the Houston Texans in Week 4, managing only 175 yards of total offense.

Their lone win came in Week 5, when they rallied from behind to defeat the Arizona Cardinals, scoring 16 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. However, any momentum was short-lived as the offense again faltered against the Raiders. The Titans remain the only NFL team yet to hold a fourth-quarter lead this season, and their 83 total points are the franchise’s fewest through six games since 1985.

Ironically, the Titans now prepare to face former head coach Mike Vrabel and his New England Patriots at Nissan Stadium. Just a few years ago, Tennessee was the AFC’s top seed, defeating stars like Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes in consecutive weeks. Since that 2021 campaign, however, the Titans have gone 17–40, firing two head coaches and two general managers along the way.

It’s been a stunning and swift decline — a true titanic collapse for a once-promising franchise.
