Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Bucky Irving is expected to sit out Sunday’s matchup against the Seattle Seahawks due to a foot sprain, according to a source speaking with ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. There’s also growing concern that Irving may be sidelined for the following game against the San Francisco 49ers.
Irving played through the injury during the Buccaneers’ Week 4 contest versus the Philadelphia Eagles but left the locker room on crutches and has been wearing a walking boot all week. Head coach Todd Bowles noted earlier this week, “If he’s not out of the boot by Friday, I’d be more inclined to say he’s probably not going to play.”
Since entering the league last season, Irving has been a vital contributor to the Buccaneers’ rushing attack, averaging an impressive 4.9 yards per carry, ranking ninth among NFL running backs. Beyond his rushing ability, Irving has become a key asset in the passing game, especially important given the team’s struggles with an injury-depleted offensive line. In Week 4 alone, Irving led the team with 102 receiving yards alongside 63 rushing yards.
With Irving likely out, the Buccaneers will lean heavily on Rachaad White, known for his strong pass protection and dynamic receiving skills, as well as Sean Tucker and rookie Josh Williams—a former undrafted free agent from LSU.
Quarterback Baker Mayfield commented on the situation Wednesday:
“I’ve had a lot of reps with Rachaad, and you’ve seen what Tuck can do with his elite speed. Losing Bucky means losing a different spark and those explosive plays we’ve seen for two years now. If Bucky can’t go, we trust the guys stepping in. Josh Williams is a smart kid who understands exactly what we’re trying to do — I really like him.”
Mayfield’s remarks highlight the team’s confidence in their depth but also underscore the impact Irving’s absence could have.
