Washington Commanders offensive lineman Nate Herbig told the team that he is retiring from the NFL, coach Dan Quinn announced on Monday. The team added him to the reserve/retired list on Tuesday morning.
Herbig played for three teams before joining Washington during the offseason to strengthen their interior line.
At 27 years old, Herbig entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2019. He also spent one season with the New York Jets and two seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, who drafted his brother, Nick, in the fourth round in 2023.
Nate Herbig ended both the 2022 season with New York and the 2024 season on injured reserve. He started in 30 of the 61 games he played in the NFL, including 12 games in 2020 with the Eagles and 11 games with Pittsburgh two years ago. Last season, he suffered a torn rotator cuff.
