Luka Doncic shared that he made a “huge step” toward better health and fitness this summer. He mentioned that his “whole body looks better” after training in Croatia for the past two months.
A report from Men’s Health Magazine, published on Monday, included several pictures of a noticeably slimmer Doncic and highlighted the Los Angeles Lakers star’s offseason diet and workout routine.
Doncic and his team informed Men’s Health that he has been following a gluten-free, low-sugar diet along with intermittent fasting. He is also consuming a high amount of protein—at least 250 grams each day.
That diet, combined with a strict training routine, has produced amazing results.
“Honestly, I think my entire body looks better,” said Doncic, who has received criticism about his weight and fitness during his seven years in the NBA.
Doncic had a tough 2024-25 season due to injuries, which included a major trade in February that moved the five-time All-Star from the Dallas Mavericks to the Lakers.
A calf injury caused Doncic to play only 50 games total with both the Mavs and Lakers, who were knocked out by the Minnesota Timberwolves in five games during the first round of the playoffs.
At 26 years old, Doncic still has two years remaining on his contract with Los Angeles, which includes a player option for the 2026-27 season. As of August 2, the Lakers can offer him a four-year extension worth $222 million, as reported by ESPN’s Bobby Marks.
Men’s Health stated that Doncic reached out to his manager just one day after the Lakers’ playoff exit and told her he wanted to begin his training program right away.
“Every summer, I do my best to work on different things,” he shared with Men’s Health. “I’m definitely competitive. This summer felt a bit unique and pushed me to improve even more.”
His training involved a month without basketball, according to physiotherapist Javier Barrio, who mentioned that Doncic didn’t start shooting around until June.
“I believe this summer, he notices the difference,” Barrio said, “and he’s really pleased.”
Doncic also mentioned that he found motivation in Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant, who he noted “gave up a lot” during their offseason training.
“This year, my team and I made a big improvement,” Doncic stated. “But this is just the beginning. I need to keep pushing forward. I can’t stop.”
