Steelers, T.J. Watt agree to 3-year, $123M extension

T.J. Watt and the Pittsburgh Steelers have reached a three-year extension that makes him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history once again.

On Thursday afternoon, Watt agreed to a three-year deal worth $123 million with the Steelers, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

This agreement ends a long and difficult contract negotiation that lasted several months. The new deal includes $108 million fully guaranteed right from the start, and his average of $41 million per year surpasses the $40 million annual pay given to Myles Garrett, a standout edge rusher for the Cleveland Browns, earlier this offseason.

Watt has recorded 73.5 sacks over the last five seasons, leading the NFL in that category. He did not attend the Steelers’ mandatory minicamp in June while both sides discussed his contract.

However, now that they have come to an agreement, Watt is expected to join the Steelers’ training camp at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday.
