Sources: 49ers’ Jauan Jennings wants new deal or trade

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings, set to earn $7.5 million in the last year of his contract, is seeking a new deal or a trade, sources informed ESPN on Monday.

This is the second summer in a row that the 49ers face a situation where a receiver wants either more money or a trade. This year’s case is connected to last year’s situation with Brandon Aiyuk.

Jennings has reached out to the 49ers about his request, but there hasn’t been much progress, according to a source speaking to ESPN. If he doesn’t get a new deal before training camp starts next week, Jennings plans to ask for a trade to a team that is willing to pay him.

As of 2025, Jennings is set to count $4.258 million against the salary cap in the last year of the two-year, $15.39 million extension he signed last offseason.

While he’s not expected to skip training camp, he likely won’t be pleased either, similar to what happened with Aiyuk last summer.

Aiyuk, who is healing from a torn ACL, is set to earn nearly $25 million this season under the extension he signed in August.

The 49ers extended Jennings’ contract through 2025 last year and believe they have treated him fairly, according to a source.

Jennings just had his best NFL season yet, achieving career highs with 77 receptions, 975 yards, and 6 touchdowns. He ranked 10th in yards per route run (2.51) and only had one drop. Plus, coach Kyle Shanahan regards Jennings as one of the top blocking wide receivers in the league.

Jennings appears to be following in the footsteps of tight end Jonnu Smith, who asked the Miami Dolphins for a new deal this summer. When his request wasn’t met, Smith asked for a trade and ended up being traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he signed a one-year extension worth $12 million.
