South African speedsters Cheslin Kolbe and Kurt-Lee Arendse have impressed fans with their amazing speed and unique skills, but their unpredictable moves often leave even their teammates puzzled.
New Springbok captain Jesse Kriel acknowledged that this duo not only confuses defenders on the opposing team but also makes him wonder what they will do next.
When asked what supporters could look forward to in the Test match against Italy at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday, especially since the Azzurri might be one of the Springboks’ easier opponents this year, Kriel was straightforward.
As he usually wears the No. 13 jersey for South Africa’s Tests, he gets a close-up view of his two wingers’ incredible footwork while frequently passing them the ball. “Sometimes it’s really confusing,” Kriel said with a smile during the captain’s press conference on Friday.
“You give those guys the ball and then you have no idea where they’re headed, and you need to clear that breakdown. So sometimes it feels like a bit of guesswork, I won’t lie. But it’s amazing to play alongside players of that level,” he added. “Fans expect players like Cheslin and Kurt-Lee to get the ball and create something special.”
“Italy has some standout players. The match will be thrilling, and the Loftus crowd is unique. I’ve played a lot of rugby in Pretoria, and it’s a special stadium. The first official Test of the year will be an amazing event.”
“Cheslin and Kurt-Lee are incredibly humble. They are down-to-earth individuals who are ready to give their all for the team. This is what makes them even more impressive than what you see during games.”
“I can’t say enough good things about those two. They are truly good people.”
For Kriel, the 67th captain of the Springbok Test team, starting the season with a win is crucial, and it all begins this weekend against Italy.
He expects to score big against the Azzurri since they have rested many of their best players. However, Kriel is not taking anything for granted. As captain, he aims to set an example through his actions rather than just words.
On Friday, Kriel expressed how meaningful this moment is for him and shared that having experienced players by his side makes a significant difference.
“It’s obviously very special.”
“I’m really excited, and I feel lucky to have such strong leaders around me. Siya has been amazing, along with Eben (Etzebeth) and Handre (Pollard).
“There’s so much experience here, and everyone is ready to help, give advice, and support you when you need to ask something.
“I consider myself very fortunate in that way and take great pride in leading a team where I can truly call some of these guys my best friends. It’s a really special moment for me.”
