Philadelphia 76ers star center Joel Embiid underwent emergency surgery for appendicitis in Houston on Thursday after being diagnosed with the condition just hours before the team’s crucial late-season matchup against the Houston Rockets.
The 76ers confirmed Embiid’s surgery shortly after he was unexpectedly added to the injury report as out due to illness ahead of Thursday’s game. The matchup was considered pivotal for Philadelphia as they continue battling to avoid the NBA Eastern Conference Play-In Tournament scheduled for next week.
It remains unclear when Embiid will return to the court following the procedure, creating uncertainty for Philadelphia during a critical stretch of the National Basketball Association regular season. The 32-year-old center has been a major contributor this season, averaging 26.9 points and 7.7 rebounds in 38 games as he worked to regain his elite form after a difficult previous campaign.
Last season, Embiid played only 19 games before being shut down due to persistent issues with his left knee, making his current return to form especially important for Philadelphia’s postseason ambitions. However, injuries and absences have continued to affect the team’s overall performance throughout the season.
Philadelphia has also dealt with other key roster disruptions, including the recent return of Paul George, who came back just weeks ago after serving a 25-game NBA suspension. These roster challenges have complicated the team’s push for a guaranteed playoff spot.
Entering Thursday’s slate of games, the 76ers held a 43-36 record and were one game behind the sixth-place Toronto Raptors with only three regular-season games remaining. The team faces additional matchups against the Indiana Pacers on Friday and the Milwaukee Bucks on Sunday, both teams currently focused on improving their draft lottery positioning.
With Embiid’s recovery timeline still uncertain, Philadelphia’s chances of avoiding the play-in tournament appear increasingly slim. If the 76ers are forced into the play-in round, the games are scheduled to take place next week, with matchups expected on Tuesday or Wednesday and a final qualifying game on Friday.
Embiid’s health status will remain a major storyline for Philadelphia fans and NBA analysts, as the team’s postseason hopes largely depend on the availability of their franchise center during the closing stages of the season.
