Ian McLauchlan, a former prop for Scotland and the British and Irish Lions, has passed away at the age of 83.

Ian McLauchlan, a former prop for Scotland and the British and Irish Lions, passed away at the age of 83, as reported by Scottish Rugby on Saturday.

Ian McLauchlan was part of the Lions teams that earned series wins over New Zealand and South Africa.

He earned the nickname “Mighty Mouse” because he was much smaller than most loosehead props. McLauchlan earned 43 caps for Scotland, served as captain 19 times, and played a key role in the Lions’ series wins over New Zealand and South Africa.

In 1973, he led Scotland in a match against England just two weeks after breaking his leg during a game against Ireland.

“He was incredibly tough, nearly unbreakable. He had an amazing career with Scotland and the Lions; it’s very sad to hear this,” said Andy Irvine, a former President of Scottish Rugby and McLauchlan’s teammate on both teams.
