Williams has announced a long-term extension for team principal James Vowles as part of their plan to bring the team back to its former greatness. Vowles joined Williams at the beginning of 2023 after a lengthy tenure managing strategy at the Mercedes team.
He has played a key role in leading the recent improvements at Williams. The team struggled in 2024, finishing ninth due to delays in upgrades and a shortage of spare parts. However, they now sit fifth in the championship as the season approaches its halfway mark.
Vowles has initiated a complete transformation of the Williams team. He candidly shared his surprise at how far behind they were technologically compared to some of the stronger teams on the grid.
In their announcement on Thursday, Williams stated: “He has led a comprehensive change at Williams with one clear goal: to restore this Formula 1 icon to winning races.”
Vowles’ vision helped persuade Carlos Sainz to join this season after he was released by Ferrari. While Williams did not specify how long Vowles’ contract is, they confirmed that it ensures “he will guide the team’s pursuit of Formula 1 World Championship success.”

Vowles expressed his excitement by saying: “I am thrilled to sign a new contract with Atlassian Williams Racing, which has felt like home since I first arrived.
This legendary team has already provided me with amazing memories, and we are all dedicated to building on our legacy and winning World Championships again.
Over the past two years, we have focused on strengthening our foundations, and now we have a solid base to aim for glory in the future.”
F1’s new regulation changes, which will take effect next season, along with the budget cap that started in 2021, have raised hopes for teams across the board to improve their competitiveness next year.
This season marks the team’s best start since 2016. With a partnership with Mercedes for engines, Williams feels confident about being in a strong position next season.
Matthew Savage, chairman of team owners Dorilton Capital, stated: “We are excited that James has signed a new contract with Atlassian Williams Racing and is committed to our shared mission.
He has brought valuable experience, energy, and leadership as we work to bring Williams back to the top of the podium. We aren’t there yet, but you can feel the momentum we are building at Grove and we are looking forward to what’s ahead.”
