Cowboys’ Trevon Diggs Aiming For Week 1 Return

Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs hopes to be back on the field by the beginning of the regular season, as reported by Calvin Watkins from the Dallas Morning News.

Over the past two years, Diggs has faced several injuries. He tore his ACL in Week 2 of the 2023 season and had to sit out for the rest of that year.

Trevon Diggs from the Cowboys is trying to be ready for the first week of the season.

The experienced player managed to recover in time for next fall’s regular season and played in the Cowboys’ first ten games, even though he dealt with a calf injury. Unfortunately, he couldn’t play through another knee problem, which led to him needing surgery in January.

Last week, Diggs attended the team’s mandatory minicamp but did not take part in any practice activities. It is unlikely that he will be ready when training camp starts. Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones mentioned in April that Diggs might begin the season on the physically unable to perform list, which would keep him out for the first four games.

This would give Diggs additional time to prepare for the season, especially if he doesn’t have a complete ramp-up period during training camp.

The 26-year-old has strong reasons to aim for a debut in Week 1. Even if he stays healthy this season, Diggs might become a free agent next offseason, according to The Athletic’s Saad Yousuf.

He topped the league with 11 interceptions in 2021, but hasn’t been able to match that level since, even though he has allowed much fewer yards while covering.

Diggs’ contract has no guaranteed money after 2025, based on OverTheCap’s information, and he is set to earn $57 million from 2026 to 2028. With rising salary cap hits for Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb—and Micah Parsons likely getting a huge deal—the Cowboys might consider parting ways with Diggs to manage their finances better.

All-Pro cornerback DaRon Bland is also in the last year of his rookie contract and could ask for over $20 million per year if he gets an extension. Letting go of Diggs after June 1 would save $15.5 million against the salary cap for 2026, leaving only $2.94 million in dead money for 2025 and 2026.
