Chiefs’ Xavier Worthy Proves He’s Not A One-Trick Pony In Rookie Season

When the Kansas City Chiefs selected receiver Xavier Worthy, many people believed that the Texas star was only a speed threat. However, there was much more to his abilities.

At first, Worthy’s performance was slow; he only reached over 40 yards twice in his first nine games. But as the season went on, the rookie, who runs a 4.21-second 40-yard dash, really started to shine and achieved at least 40 yards in his last seven regular-season games (except for Week 18 against the Broncos).

In addition, Worthy excelled during the playoffs, recording 45, 85, and 157 yards along with three touchdowns. This showed that he wasn’t just good for deep passes; he could be utilized all over the field in different ways. His quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, quickly realized that Worthy had more skills than just speed.

“The biggest thing I learned is he’s not just fast; he can make plays,” Mahomes said about Worthy. “You saw some of the tough catches he made towards the end of the season, like in the Bills game or even his last catch in the Super Bowl. He’s someone who will go up and make a play on the ball.

“So my job is to give him more chances even when he’s matched up one-on-one. I need to throw it up and let him make a play. With Hollywood [Brown] joining us and Rashee back on the field, he’ll have even more opportunities to stretch our offense.”
