Hampshire batter James Vince has expressed his excitement about returning to action as he prepares to lead the Hawks in this summer’s T20 Blast. Earlier this year, Vince announced that he would not be playing red-ball cricket in 2025.
The decision followed a difficult period for his family, after their home was targeted in a series of attacks last summer, with intruders damaging windows and vehicles during multiple early morning incidents. As a result, Vince and his family relocated to Dubai.

“This time last year was full of uncertainty for us as a family,” Vince told BBC South Today. “We left in October without a clear plan, but eventually settled in Dubai, found a school for the kids, and things have been going well. Although it’s very hot there now, it’s been great to return, reconnect with friends, and play for Hampshire again. Without the stress and worry we faced before, it’s a much better place to be mentally.”
This marks the first time in more than a decade that the 34-year-old won’t take part in Hampshire’s County Championship campaign, where he’s been the top scorer over the last four seasons. Since debuting in 2009, Vince has amassed nearly 12,500 first-class runs for Hampshire at an average above 41. He has also represented England in 13 Tests, 25 ODIs, and 17 T20Is, with his last international appearance coming in March 2023.
Vince is set to play in the Hawks’ opening T20 Blast match against Essex at the Utilita Bowl on Friday and also plans to take part in The Hundred. “It felt a bit odd watching the guys start the season without me,” he said. “But it’s great to be back now. I’m excited for the coming months—we hope to enjoy ourselves and play good cricket.”
Happy with their new life in Dubai, Vince says returning to the UK for a few months has been refreshing. Hampshire, tied as the most successful men’s domestic T20 team with three titles, are aiming to reach finals day again this season after falling short last year.
“Missing out last season was disappointing,” Vince admitted. “Our goal is always to get through the group stage and stay in contention. We’ve had some fantastic moments in past seasons, and we want to be in the running again. A strong start would be ideal, and hopefully we can attract a good crowd, put on a show, and get the win for them.”
